A stamping die RFQ checklist should give the toolmaker enough technical and commercial information to evaluate the part, select the correct die concept, estimate tooling cost and define a realistic lead time. When the RFQ package is incomplete, suppliers must make assumptions, which can create quotation gaps, engineering changes and delays after the project starts.
Provide Complete Part Drawings and 3D Data
The first requirement is a clear part drawing. A 2D drawing should show dimensions, tolerances, datum references, material thickness, surface requirements, burr direction and any critical-to-quality features. A 3D model is also useful for reviewing formed geometry, bend relationships, draw depth and areas that may require special forming stations.
The drawing revision should be clearly identified so that every supplier quotes the same part version. When possible, buyers should provide editable CAD files rather than screenshots or PDF drawings alone.
Define the Material Specification
Material information directly affects stamping tool design and press requirements. The RFQ should state the material grade, thickness, hardness or temper, coating condition and any approved alternatives.
High-strength steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and pre-plated materials behave differently during blanking and forming. Material properties influence die clearance, springback compensation, lubrication, tool steel selection and expected maintenance requirements.
Confirm Production Volume and Tooling Type
Buyers should provide annual demand, estimated program life, production lot size and target strokes per minute. These figures help determine whether the project is better suited to a progressive die, transfer die, tandem die or single-operation tooling.
Production volume also affects strip layout, automation level, wear-part design and spare component planning. A die intended for several thousand parts has different requirements from tooling expected to produce millions of parts.
Include Press and Production Line Information
The toolmaker needs information about the press and production environment. Important details include press tonnage, bed size, shut height, stroke length, feed direction, feeder capacity, bolster specifications, transfer system and scrap removal method.
Available sensors and die protection systems should also be confirmed. A die designed without accurate press data may require later modification even when the stamped part geometry is correct.
Specify Quality and Inspection Requirements
Quality requirements should be defined before quotation. The RFQ should identify critical dimensions, inspection frequency, capability requirements, gauge requirements, sample quantity, material certificates and dimensional report formats.
If checking fixtures, CMM reports, capability studies or special surface inspections are required, they should be included in the original quotation scope rather than added after tool completion.
Clarify the Complete Tooling Scope
Buyers should state whether the quotation must include die design, simulation, tool manufacturing, tryout material, sample production, inspection reports, checking fixtures, spare parts, packaging, export documents and on-site support.
The required T0 date, final delivery date, delivery destination and applicable tooling standards should also be specified.
