A metal piercing die is designed from the material thickness and the required condition of the pierced edge. Punch-to-die clearance influences cutting load, rollover, burnish, fracture, and burr height. It must also be consistent around the complete profile. The piercing punch and die should be located from functional part datums, not from an edge that changes after forming. For holes pierced in a formed panel, the nest must support the local surface without distorting the profile.
Piercing die components include punches, die buttons, retainers, backup plates, strippers, guides, and often slug ejectors or sensors. Small punches need short unsupported length and dependable guidance. Replaceable buttons are useful where one feature wears faster than the rest of the tool. Steel grade and heat-treatment hardness are chosen according to material strength, coating, expected volume, and punch size rather than assigned uniformly to every component. Closely spaced holes should be checked for weak die sections and for interaction between cutting cracks. If punch breakage would damage the part or tool, sensors can monitor punch return or slug passage before the next stroke.
A piercing die set should prevent slugs from returning to the working surface. Tapered relief, vacuum, air blow, mechanical knockouts, or monitored scrap passages may be used according to slug shape. The stripper must remove stock from the punches without bending the part. Stable dropping off and a clear scrap route reduce double hits, surface dents, and unexplained tool marks. Light scrap can be moved through an embossed chute or a cylinder-driven vibrator where space permits.
Build information should start with the press specification, followed by the die technical standards, current 3D drawing, and dimensioned 2D drawing. Please also identify critical hole position tolerances, burr direction, gauging method, and expected production volume. First-off samples after maintenance should be compared with the approved hole chart rather than judged only by visual appearance.
Piercing Process Certification and Patent Evidence
Piercing die performance depends on hole position, cutting clearance, punch support, burr direction, and reliable slug control. The certificate module can include ISO 9001, high-tech enterprise certification, export operation qualification, and patents related to punching, chamfering, slug ejection, die-button structures, or monitored piercing arrangements.
This supporting section is relevant because a Piercing Die is often judged by small features that affect assembly accuracy. The documents help demonstrate that the supplier can manage precision cutting work through controlled procedures, technical improvement records, and inspection discipline rather than relying only on visual checking.
